To achieve immortality, fox spirit Bai Shisan disguises as a young man and travels to the human world in search of a divine pill. There he befriends the innocent scholar Wang Zijin whom he later realize is the key to his transcendence. To keep Wang safe, Bai must bond with him on his road to the imperial examination and fends off threats from mythic creatures and evil spirits.
